Huelo Kohola Necklace (who el loh koh hoe lah) - Whale Tail

This whale tail necklace was created using a paua shell carved in the shape of a whale's tail. You can customize this paua shell necklace to suit your personal style and budget with your choice of sterling silver or silver plated material.

The paua shell is only found in the sea around New Zealand. Paua shells are the most colorful of all abalone shells. The color varies from greens, pinks, purples, blues and even some shells have gold or crimson toning. The color in the paua shell changes when looked from different angles. The iridescence is similar to the Mother of Pearl shell, but far more brilliant. The black pattern in the shell comes from layers of protein that are laid down between the layers of calcium that make up the shell. The vibrant colors are from light being refracted within the crystal layers, it is the same iridescent effect found in Opals.
